Description of Book Happy Place by Emily Henry

INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!

“The beach-read master hooks us again."—People

Named a Most Anticipated Book of 2023 by BuzzFeed ∙ Paste Magazine ∙ Elle Southern Living ∙ SheReads Culturess ∙ Medium ∙ Her Campus Readers Digest ∙ Zibby Mag and more!

A couple who broke up months ago pretend to still be together for their annual weeklong vacation with their best friends in this glittering and wise new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Emily Henry.

Harriet and Wyn have been the perfect couple since they met in college—they go together like salt and pepper, honey and tea, lobster and rolls. Except, now—for reasons they’re still not discussing—they don’t.

They broke up five months ago. And still haven’t told their best friends.

Which is how they find themselves sharing a bedroom at the Maine cottage that has been their friend group’s yearly getaway for the last decade. Their annual respite from the world, where for one vibrant, blissful week they leave behind their daily lives; have copious amounts of cheese, wine, and seafood; and soak up the salty coastal air with the people who understand them most.

Only this year, Harriet and Wyn are lying through their teeth while trying not to notice how desperately they still want each other. Because the cottage is for sale and this is the last week they’ll all have together in this place. They can’t stand to break their friends’ hearts, and so they’ll play their parts. Harriet will be the driven surgical resident who never starts a fight, and Wyn will be the laid-back charmer who never lets the cracks show. It’s a flawless plan (if you look at it from a great distance and through a pair of sunscreen-smeared sunglasses). After years of being in love, how hard can it be to fake it for one week…in front of those who know you best?

Reviews of Happy Place - Emily Henry Book

  • Don’t bother

Unfortunately, I found Happy Place to be vapid and silly. The characters were not believable. What women in America gives up on being a doctor after finishing medical school to follow a man to Montana (of all places)! The dialogue and banter between the friends was not believable. The male protagonist was insecure and boring. The female protagonist’s thoughts and neurosis were overplayed. I would skip this one.
  • A Maine escape.

Happy Place tells the story too many know too well, the timid people-pleaser trying to find their way in a group of friends that all have a place in this world. Harriet is smart, but lacks the passion behind her career and lost the love of her life that anchored and assured her. Wyn’s own struggles and need for space is just as relatable as Harry’s indifference to the pain around her. Cleo and Kimmy’s relationship adds a lightness and Sabrina grounds the group and deserves more respect for how she held the entire group together. I feel like we have all known and loved our own version of a Perth- the life of the party- and all have known and loved our own version of Wyn too- our first real adult love. Their relationship was sweet, but realistic. And the faltering friendships that they try to hold together through lies is just as realistic. This is a coming-to-age of adulthood as much as a romance. The beautiful Maine setting also adds a layer of wanderlust and Henry’s writing makes you feel like you can smell the salt air and feel the breeze yourself. Overall, a fun read, though slow at times.

I always seem to like the Emily Henry books that less people like so I guess I’m in the minority, but I loved this one. Like a reunion episode of Friends, The One Where Sabrina Got Married. I laughed and cried and wished I had a friendship group just like Sabrina, Chloe & Harriet!
  • So good!
